Stress is a natural response to changes or challenges in our environment. Too much of it, however, can lead to sleep problems, muscle aches, difficulty breathing, and other uncomfortable symptoms. But can stress affect our eyes and, more specifically, our retinas?

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a condition where fluid builds up under the retina, distorting vision. While the exact cause of CSC is unknown, stress is a major risk factor. Here’s what you need to know about CSC and how stress can affect the way you see the world.

CSC Symptoms and Risk Factors

People under a lot of stress may be more likely to develop CSC. Stress releases a hormone in the body called cortisol, which can cause inflammation and fluid leakage. CSC may also be caused or worsened by exposure to corticosteroids, medications, and products that treat inflammation, like skin creams, inhalers, and nasal sprays. Common symptoms include:

  • Distorted, dimmed, or blurred central vision
  • A dark area in your central vision
  • Normally straight lines that appear bent, crooked, or irregular
  • Objects appearing smaller or further away than they are
  • White objects having a brownish tinge or appearing duller in color

Treating CSC

CSC often resolves on its own after a few weeks or months. However, you should still see a retina specialist to monitor the condition and ensure that your vision problems aren’t permanent. If the fluid doesn’t drain on its own, treatment options include injectable medications and lasers. Even if treatment is successful, CSC may return in the same eye or the other one.

Certain lifestyle changes may help prevent or manage CSC, like getting adequate sleep, limiting the usage of caffeine, alcohol, and corticosteroids, and practicing stress management strategies.

Learn More How Stress Impacts the Retina

The retina absorbs the light we see and sends electrical signals to the brain, translating light into images. Unfortunately, excessive stress can potentially interfere with this process, leading to vision problems. At Retinal Consultants Medical Group, our experienced retina specialists can effectively diagnose and treat retinal conditions like central serous chorioretinopathy.
